school is starting to kick my rear, so i've been attempting to be good. the unfortunate thing about the quarter system is that you practically start behind. students can't get all their books and readers until the end of the first week, effectively putting you behind at least that first week. if you're lucky, you take that first free weekend at school to read every single thing that you missed while you were standing in line to give away all your money for these heavy books by wordy authors. once that's done you can work on actually being prepared for lectures and discussions.

in the meantime, i'm working on a wrist distaff to see if it really helps keep my roving from joining my singles prematurely, and spinning all the 1 oz samples i've bought at solvang (so i won't feel guitly buying more to try when i go next weekend). on the knitting front i'm working on short socks (as in cuff straight to heel socks) out of the supersock i got last quarter. it's my between class knitting. i was reading troutgirly's knitblog and her complaints of new knitters making scarves, socks and hats before making a sweater. personally, i'd love to make a sweater, but right now i don't have the funds to buy the kind of yarn i'd want for a sweater. i could save tons of money and make a sweater out of red heart but i would never wear it. i want my first sweater to be something i'd enjoy making. i know i'm not the only new knitter that first aspired to making a sweater, only to put it off for practical reasons. socks are very portable and not too expensive. scarves are a good way to practice stitches without having to teach yourself how to center them onto a large garment; in fact, scarves can a good beginning medium for designing knitwear. i have made knit tops which have turned out pretty well, but my wallet can't handle that too much. i have very sensitive skin, so one of my first tops was out of cashmerino. @_@ sounds luxurious, i know. but i like making things and i want the things i make to be things that i will enjoy in the long run.

out of time for now, must go to class. if i get there early enough, i can fit in a few rounds of my supersock before we start.

I do my thing and you do your thing
I am not in this world to
live up to your expectations,
and you are not in this world to
live up to mine.
You are you
and I am I
and if by chance we find each other,
it's beautiful.
