wow it's been a while.

been home in escondido for three weeks. in that span of time, i've cleaned most of the house, read 4 outlander books, hp#5, finished a lace knit doily according to the pattern i found at www.nurhanne.com (i think it was called spiralen?), and knit a few inches on my supersock.

also volunteered to be a test knitter for kristi over at the domestic sphere. i loved the surf and turf skirt she designed, so i can't wait to see what she's got planned.

speaking of knitty, the summer issue was neat, though there wasn't much that i'd like to knit for myself. then i saw the summer surprises. wow. definitely plan to make cleo. great picture! i almost missed the summer surprises if i hadn't seen the forums at knitters review. they were harsh. like a group of gossipping i-don't-know-whats. it bothered me to read their comments even before i saw the pattern and picture. when i started posting to the forums, it seemed like mostly older knitters, yes, but they were friendly and answered my questions when i wasn't too shy to ask them. i'm not saying they should curb their opinions, but i personally was put off by it. knitty is definitely not geared towards everyone, but they shouldn't sound so "well, i'm *sorry* i'm not HYUK enough to be amazed at knitty." yes, some of those people at KR have been knitting longer than i've been alive and they may be set in their opinions but when i read that thread it struck me as rather discouraging. yes, i am new to knitting, but i don't consider myself nearly cool enough to be a hyuk. i think knitty is a great creative outlet for (non-)professional designers who take an idea and run with it. and knitty gives me inspiration, even with the designs i don't want to knit. knitting has never been exclusively for older people/younger people/thinner people/richer people. with a world of rowan patterns, etc i'm glad there are places where i can find patterns for things i want to make that will consider an XL something larger than a 36 in bust. it's tiring (but not necessarily difficult) to continually recalculate and resize patterns. i love knitting, but when people publicly put down things i'd like to make, it makes me wonder where all the encouragement i first found went. what's wrong with knitting tank tops and halter tops? I've lived in southern california almost all my life, that's what i wear, and i'm glad that i can find patterns that i don't have to modify to fit my body. amy, wherever you are, thanks for such a great pattern -- i can't wait to stat knitting it.

I do my thing and you do your thing
I am not in this world to
live up to your expectations,
and you are not in this world to
live up to mine.
You are you
and I am I
and if by chance we find each other,
it's beautiful.
